Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Governing Policy Statement
MP has become more aware than ever that we are all connected. We have weathered a pandemic while also witnessing more prominently the continued dehumanization of the Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) community. We stand with them against injustice, inequality, racism, and hatred and will not take a back seat and allow this to continue, especially in our industry. At the same time, we know that words and intentions alone will not break the cycle of racism and hatred.
This statement of policy is to hold ourselves, our employees, consultants, clients, and the greater design community, accountable for the change and education that is required for a more equitable society. We are committed to continued action in dismantling the racial inequalities that surround us.
Discrimination and oppression can prevent people from engaging with employers, coworkers, and clients in a way that fully reflects their ability, experience, and contributions. We value the perspectives and experiences of all members of both our society and our work environment and will prioritize elevating those underrepresented voices. However, we recognize that understanding, acknowledging, and working to eliminate oppression is a learning process for us all. Different people can be at different stages in the learning process, and we will continue to create opportunities for learning to assist each other in the education and self-reflection that is required. Bias and micro-aggression will be directly addressed with improvement required as a continuation of employment.
We are committed to the principals of anti-racism and anti-oppression. We believe that through cooperation and collective action we can change society for a more equitable future. We believe that the architectural, interior design, construction, and real estate fields have an important role to play in creating that more equitable future for all.
- We acknowledge the history of racism in our profession and the generational harm and trauma that designers, developers, trade unions, and construction have played in the denial of individual opportunities and community growth.
- We will use our platform within the industry to promote and amplify the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in the design, construction, and real estate fields.
- We will challenge the white people within our office, our industry, and our community to acknowledge their own racism, center the experiences of BIPOC communities and individuals, and actively engage in anti-racist practices.
- We are committed to our continued education as individuals, as a company, and as members of the design community so that we can uproot the systemic racism on which we currently stand.
